이 글은 90년대 초반 2권의 시집을 남기고 스스로 짧은 생애를 마감한 이연주의 시편을 페미니즘의 문제의식과 탈식민주의 인식을 기반으로 분석하여, ‘여성주의’의 입장에서 그 재현의 정치성을 읽어낸 것이다. 포스트-식민 국가의 근대화는 제국주의적 식민 기획의 일환으로 진행되며 성취되는 까닭에, 필연적으로 제국주의, 자본주의, 민족주의와 밀접하게 관계를 맺고 있으며, 특히 과거 전통과도 긴밀히 연관될 수밖에 없다. 따라서 포스트-식민공간에 여성범주가 더해진 ‘포스트-식민주의 여성 담론’은 정치 · 경제 · 사회 · 문화 · 역사 등 사회의 전 영역이 복잡하게 얽혀 복합성을 띨 수밖에 없다.
기지촌의 수간호사로 일했던 독특한 이력을 가진 이연주는 한국 여성주의 시사상 독특하게도 매음녀를 시적 주체로 호명하여 형상화했다. 이연주의 시편에 재현된 ‘매음녀’는 상징이자 실체인 존재로서 다양한 담론의 교차지대에 위치한다. 이 ‘매음녀’는 한국 내의 전통적 성별의식 및 가부장제 이데올로기, 제국주의, 자본주의, 민족주의 담론 등이 횡단하는 장소로서, 복수적으로 억압된 ‘서발턴’에 대해 알레고리적 독해를 요구하는 기표이다. 이는 이연주가 ‘매음녀’라는 표상 기호 안에 우리 근현대사의 암울한 역사적 기억과 유난히 격동적이었던 80년대적 징후들을 배경으로, 후기 자본주의의 강렬한 욕망과 무의식에 은폐된 식민화된 영토까지를 고스란히 끄집어내어 펼쳐놓기 때문이다.
본 연구는 한국 현대 여성 시사에서 독특한 서발턴 문학으로서 여성/서발턴의 투쟁과 전복의 정치성을 드러낸 것으로 보이는 이연주의 텍스트 분석을 통해 한국여성주의 시 연구가 나아가야 할 윤리적 지평을 가늠해보고자 했다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 이연주의 시편들이 첫째, 포스트-식민공간인 한국 사회에서 여성 억압의 기저에는 ‘이미 존재하는 억압체계’로서 식민체제를 통해 만들어지고 젠더화 된 ‘근대적 가족제도’와 이에 내재된 남성중심주의의 가부장적 희생자 담론이 기저에서 작동해왔으며 둘째, 이연주가 시적 주체로 호명한 매음녀는 은유 혹은 실체로서 식민 잔재를 청산하지 못한 채 미국 중심의 자본주의 세계체제에 종속된 신 식민관계로, 성별 성애적 관계로 구성되었음을 밝혔다. 셋째, 격동적으로 흘러온 한국현대사의 이면에서 여성/서발턴은 제국의 남성 주체와 피식민 남성주체, 그리고 피식민 남성 주체의 이중적 욕망으로 인한 내부 식민지였으며, 여성에 대한 폭압의 기저에 자리하고 있음을 밝혔다.
이연주는 매음녀의 고백적 발화를 통해 목소리 없는 서발턴인 ‘여성’에게 적극적인 ‘말 걸기’를 시도했다. 본 연구는 ‘매음녀’라는 표상기호를 통해 유지되고 재생산되는 이데올로기뿐만 아니라 시의식의 현상학으로서 구체적인 시편을 분석함으로써, 이연주의 시편에서 재현되고 있는 여성/서발턴이 어떤 실천적 메시지를 전하고 있는지를 구명하는 데 일차적인 목적이 있다. 아울러 한국의 서발턴에 대한 이러한 면밀한 재독이 한국 여성주의 시문학이 나아가야 할 윤리적 지향을 가늠하는 중요한 노둣돌이 될 것으로 기대한다.
