Telephony: Dec. S, 1994: Unveils PCS Strategy, Focusing on TDMA, GSM. CDMA is in its validation stage and has technical drawbacks that need correcting, making TDMA the more appealing technology platform for cellular -carriers that want to build PCS networks that incorporate their digital AMPS networks, said . --- • Americas Network March 1, 1995: CDMA Deployment: Stalled or Ready for the Fast Lane? (Code Division Multiple Access} There also are technical reasons will not --- pursue CDMA development, adds though he wouldn't elaborate. For him, the timing and expense of CDMA render the question moot. "IS-95 is difficult and expensive to implement." Reuter Newswire-Western Euroee% Reuter Economic News% % February 27" 1996" Makes TDMA System Claim But the battle for supremacy between the two systems is already settled," said, adding that CDMA has yet to prove it is a viable system. "They (CDMA suppliers) will have to prove they can do it first." ________________________--------.J MobilePhone News! June 17, 1996 -------------- Prepares for Growth, Clarifies TDMA/CDMA Stance. "There is no doubt that IS-95 works, but it is a me-too Rroduct," America's Network, JuI), 1, 1996 Get the Bugs Out:. it's Make-or-BreakTime for CDMA. (Code Division Multiple Access) (Cover Stor)') Partisans employ fierce rhetoric. A paper presented at this year's GSM World Congress likened CDMA support to the victims of an 18th Century hoax in which an English woman convinced some prominent ~ scientists that she'd given birth to a litter of rabbits... "We do believe in CDMA per se,.but we believe in a wideband CDMA," " says__.... "Specifically, CDMA's single-carrier nature creates an issue often referred to as the near/far problem,'f claims this problem and the diversity touted by CDMA backers can mal<e it impossible to determine which is the best serving cell. '..._.~ " BusinessWire, April 16, 1997 Creating the Wideband Wireless Networks of the Future W-CDMA technology, however, ~s quite different from narrowband CDMA techllology used in the IS 95 standard now being deployed in certaill parts of the world. "IS 95 is just one standard using CDMA technology," says _ One of the important differences between W-CDMA and llarrowband IS 95 is the underlying network infrastructure. The design of this networl< protocol is a critical consideration because many important system functions - including ~ssentialnetwork management functions - reside at the network level. Handling Digital Traffic - Another such function is the system's ability to handle the digital data traffic used in applications like Internet access. Utilizing the TCP/IP network protocol (the protocol used on the Internet), the [W-CDMA] wideband system will easily accommodate PACKET data traffic - the kind of traffic that travels in short "bursts." LEO Mobile Satellites: Globalstar Employs CDMA-GSM ~ Underlying Objectives for ~ cdmaONE Evolution Backward Compatibility is Foremost • Underlying Objectives • Full Backward Compatibility: for existing COMA networks (support IS-gSA and B) in addition to new standards and services on same carrier • Ease of Delllo\lment All hardware modifications should be limited to ASIC's pin-to-pin .c,ompatible to existing circuit boards • TransJJarenc\l to Existing Services Voice: All standardized COMA vocoders Data: All present and near-term standards ~ Short Term Goals (1999): ~ The "95-C" Solution • Improve Capacity, Coverage, Efficiency • Efficient Medium Rate Data Services (64K to 100K+) • Longer Standby Times (Several Hundred Hours) • Introduce Efficient Mobile-Assisted Hard Handoffs (COMA-to-COMA, COMA-to-AMPS, COMA-to-GSM) , Improved Capacity and Coverage (Forward Links) Limitations of IS-gSA Forward Links 9.6 Kbps Links: Very Slow Power Control (Error Message back to SSC) 14.4 Kbps Links: a) Slow Power Control (Error Indicator per Frame; Loop Latency) b) Very Weak 'Code (rate 3/4) Both Speeds a) Limitation of 64 (Walsh Function) Channels b) Excessive Handoff Overhead (approx. 1000/0 : 2 Transmiss'ions/Link) Wireless Multiple Access: Essential Requirement Set • Channel Measurement • Channel Control and Modification .• MUltiple User Channel Isolation ~ Improved Capacity and Coverage ~ (Forward Links) (Cont.d) 95-C Solutions a) Faster More Accurate Power Control - More Accurate EJN o Measurement and Much Reduced PC Loop Latency (20 msec.) b) QPSK replaces BPSK Modulation Affording: 1. 128 Walsh Function Channels- (I and Q) 2. Stronger Codes: rate 3/8 for 14.4 Kbps Links and rate 1/4·for 9.6 Kbps c) Reduce Soft-Handoff Overhead to 70% (1.7 Transmission/Link) Forward Link Improvements Gain vs IS-95-A 9.6 Kbps 14.4 Kbps Airlink Total 2.0 dB 2.5 dB Power Control 1.SdB O.SdB Coding O.SdB 2.0 dB Soft-HIO 0.7 dB 0.7 dB reduction Total Gain 2.7 dB 3.2 dB 90% 110% Improved Capacity and Coverage (Reverse Link) Limitations of IS-gSA Reverse Link • Power control latency (though much better than for forward links) • Choice of Modulation - Orthogonal 64-ary waveforms (coherent over only 2 to 3 bit times -- driven by conservative assumptions on speed of fading) 9S-C Solutions • Reduced PC loop latency • Use modulation similar to for·ward links: BPSK (pilot-aided) permitting long-term coherent reception • Rate 1/4 code instead of 1/2 and 1/3 provides further improvement • Reverse Link Improvements Gain from IS-95-A 9.6 Kbps,Links 14.4 Kbps Links Total 2.8 dB 3.3 dB 90% 114% ~ Overall Capacity/Coverage ~Improvements • Nearly: Double Capacit~for95-C Equipped Users (Number of voice/users/sector/carrier) 38 users/sector for 9.6 Kbps links (8K vocoders) 25 users/sector for 14.4 Kbps links (13K vocoders) • !m.Jlroved Covera~ for 95-C Equipped Users ~ Efficient Medium Rate Data Services 15-958 Limitation , • Forward link limitation to 64 Walsh function channels constrains number of high-speed users • Reverse link modulation renders rates higher than than 38.4K or 57.6K (4 times voice rates) cumbersome 95-C Solution • Forward link increased to 128 channels (QPSK) • New reverse link modulation (8PSK, Pilot-aided) • Efficiently supports data rates of 8 times voice (76.8 kbps or 115.2 Kbps) .~ ~ Standby Time • Removing the system limitation on improvements in standby time • Standby time improvements are to be expected from lower power devices and improved phone designs. The system, as defined in IS-95-A, B, imposes a limit to the possible improvements due to a relatively small ratio of "sleep time" vs. "awake time" for a slotted MS's. • A slotted MS today must wake up, demodulate, and decode the paging channel one slot within its slot cycle. Typically used slot cycles are 1.28 sec or 2.56 sec. The average awake time to perform the above operations is approximately 96 ms, thus ratios are 13:1 and 26:1, respectively. • Most of the time this is done just to find out that "there was NOT a page for me". • The new proposal increases the ratio sleep/awake to 200:1 and 400:1 for the same slot cycles as above. • Next chart shows the trend.
