Bell Atlantic Mobile Executive Summary (Excerpts) • In June 1992, a joint field testing agreement of COMA equipment was signed by Bell Atlantic Mobile (BAM) and Qualcomm Incorporated. The agreement provided BAM with the Roving Test System supplied by Qualcomm Incorporated which would be used to perform field tests and demonstrations of COMA technology. • COMA System Configuration: The COMA system consisted of two cell sites and a switch, located in downtown Washington, D.C. The COMA cells were co-located with cells being used for the present analog cellular system. The test plan was developed by BAM and Qualcomm. • The ~acity simulated on the COMA system was ten times the capacity. of the analog cellular system. Throughout all tests, the capacity load was held constant. Major Attributes of COMA (IS-95) • Universal Frequency Reuse • Fast and Accurate Power Control ~. VITERBI VICE CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF TECHNICAL OFFICER QUALCO~INCORPORATED In July 1985, Dr. Andrew J. Viterbi co-founded QUALCOMM, Inc., a developer and manufacturer of mobile satellite communications and digital wireless telephony, where he currently serves as Vice Chairman and Chief Technical Officer. Under his leadership, QUALCOMM has received international recognition for innovative technology in the areas of digital wireless telephone systems and products based on Code Division Multiple Access (COMA) technologies. Prior to co-founding QUALCOMM, Dr. Viterbi co-founded LINKABIT Corporation in 1968, a digital communications company, where he served as Executive Vice President and later as President. Dr. Viterbi helped guide the growth of LINKABIT from a few part-time employees in 1969 to over 1,400 employees in 1985. While at LINKABIT, he participated in the development of the Viterbi decoder product line, the Air Force Dual Modem, the first commercial VSAT, VideoCipherâ„¢ and a TDMA digital wireless telephone, among other products. In 1980, UNKABIT was acquired by M/A-Com, Inc., a telecommunications component and system manufacturer. From 1963 to 1973, Dr. Viterbi served as a Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Engineering and Applied Science, where he did fundamental work in digital communication theory and wrote numerous research papers and two books, for which he has received international recognition in the form of multiple awards. From 1957 to 1963, Dr. Viterbi was a member of the team that designed and implemented the telemetry equipment of the first successful U.S. satellite, Explorer I, in the Communications Research Section of the California Institute of Technology Jet Propulsion Laboratory. While there, he was one of the first communication engineers to recognize the potential and propose digital transmission techniques for space and satellite telecommunication systems. Viterbi received his B.S. and MS. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1957, and a Ph.D from the University of Southern California, 1962. Viterbi also received an Honorary Doctor of Engineering Degree, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 1990. Farhang Ene!. .. , 5/A1 ()~ THE TECHNOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF PERSONA~ k( /-1-(.< COMMUNICATION SERVICE \ (; {J~ I --l Andrew J. Viterbi Vice Chairman and Chief Technical Officer QUALCOMM Incorporated SUMMARY l .- l The theoretical foundations of personal communication systems are rooted in the physics of solid state devices and the mathematics of information theory. The discovery of the transistor by William Shockley and collaborators, and the publication of the "Mathematical Theory of Communication" by Claude Shannon, within a year of each other set the stage for the pocket personal communicator. Interestingly, even with the million-transistor chip technologies of today, we are still orders of magnitude from the physical limits in speed, size and power consumption of solid state devices. Conversely, in many cases our communication systems operate at a performance level within a factor of two from the upper limit, for the given power and bandwidth limitations, established by information theory. We should recognize, however, that were it not for the level of circuit integration already achieved, such communication systems would be many times larger and at least an order of magnitude less power - and bandwidth-efficient than what we have become accustomed to expect. The great challenge of personal communication is to efficiently provide wireless access for at least a hundred times as many users, often mobile, as are currently served worldwide. This will provide telephone service to many billions of persons in emerging nations, who currently have none, and data terminal access to virtually all inhabitants of developed nations. A secondary goal, likely to be met early in the next century, is to provide ubiquitous as well as universal service through dissemination of wireless hand-held terminals served both by terrestrial base stations and low earth-orbit satellite repeaters. Service providers such as Hutchison in HK and Taiwanese government-own cellular provider are pondering what to do with their NDigital AMPS N , Chinese are debating TDMA/CDMA, narrowband or broadband. Of course, your personal insights on the general area of communications and information theory will benefit researchers/students greatly. I am sure the interest level is quite high. Please keeep in touch.
