Abstract

In the structural design of ship hull, the shell element is used for the analysis of the global model. However, the analysis using the solid elements is necessary for the analysis of the stress concentration zone or the crack vicinity. Generally, the zooming method is used to solve such problems. In this paper, the mixed method of the shell elements and the solid elements using the overlay method is presented. The present method is more advantageous than the zooming method in respect of the accuracy of the solution and the modeling of the finite element mesh. Some examples of the plate model with a crack are shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the present method.
