본 연구는 시바 료타로(司馬遼太郞)의 한국 기행문인 「한나라 기행(韓の國紀行)」(이하 「한나라 기행」)이 한국에 대한 시선을 어떻게 재현하고 있는가를 분석하는 데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해서 우선 「한나라 기행」의 텍스트로부터 문학지리 관련 주제어를 377개 도출하였다. 그런 다음 「한나라 기행」에 재현된 시바 료타로의 각 방문지별 시선의 특징을 파악하기 위해서 방문지별 주제어 중에서도 중요성이 높은 핵심 개념을 선정하고, 이들 간의 의미연결망을 구성하였다. 의미연결망의 맥락적ㆍ심층적 의미는 John Urry의 여행자의 시선 및 탈식민주의 지리학의 관점을 적용하여, 현상학적 기법을 활용하여 해석하였다. 「한나라 기행」에 재현된 시바 료타로의 한국에 대한 시선이 갖는 특징은 다음과 같이 해석될 수 있다. 첫째, 「한나라 기행」은 한국의 장소와 경관에 대한 인류학적 시선이 많은 비중을 차지하고 있는 여행기이다. 시바 료타로의 한국 방문은 그 동기부터가 일본인의 원류를 찾겠다는 인류학적 측면이 다분했다. 그리고 여행지마다 그가 눈여겨 본 장소와 경관 역시, 고대 일본인과 일본 문화의 원류 및 한일 간 교류의 공간적 재현이라는 측면에서 접근이 이루어진 경우가 많았다. 둘째, 「한나라 기행」에는 한국의 소박하고 자연스러운 농촌 경관과 인간미 넘치는 한국인에 대한 낭만적인 시선도 재현되어 있었다. 셋째, 「한나라 기행」에 재현된 한국에 대한 시선은 탈식민주의 지리학적 관점에서 복합적으로 해석될 수 있는 측면도 다분히 있다. 즉, 한국을 존중하는 시선과 한국을 오리엔탈리즘적 관점에서 부정적으로 바라본 시선이 혼재되어 있었다. 시바 료타로는 일본의 ‘국민 작가’라 불릴 정도로 일본인들에게 많은 영향력을 행사해오고 있는 작가인데다, 한국에 대한 이 같은 시선은 다수의 일본인들에게도 예외가 되지 않을 개연성이 적지 않다. 따라서 「한나라 기행」에 재현된 이러한 시선의 문학지리학적 의의는 간과하기 어렵다. 이러한 연구 결과는 일본 문학, 나아가 일본인의 한국에 대한 시선에 대한 지속적인 연구의 필요성을 시사하기도 한다.
This study aims to analyze the gaze toward Korea represented in Kara no Kuni Kiko (「韓の國紀行」), a piece of travel literature written by Ryotaro Shiba. To conduct the analysis, 377 geographic concepts were deduced from the text of Kara no Kuni Kiko. Keywords from each place or region where Ryotaro Shiba visited were extracted from the geographic concepts and were then constructed into semantic networks, through which the characteristics of the gazes toward those places were analyzed. Contextual and sophisticated meanings of the semantic networks were interpreted using the method of phenomenology. The interpretation was based on the theories of tourist gaze, developed by John Urry, and postcolonial geography. The characteristics of Ryotaro Shiba’s gaze toward Korea as represented in Kara no Kuni Kiko are as follows: First, anthropological gaze was the majority among the gazes toward places and landscapes of Korea represented in Kara no Kuni Kiko. The main motivation of Ryotaro Shiba’s travel to Korea was a kind of anthropological motivation to find the origin of Japanese people and Japanese ancient history. Moreover, he gazed at places and landscapes of Korea as a spatial representation of the origin of Japanese people and Japanese ancient history. Second, Kara no Kuni Kiko represented a romantic gaze toward the honest and kind-hearted Korean people and the rural landscape. Third, the gazes toward Korea represented in Kara no Kuni Kiko implied complex meanings from the perspective of postcolonial geographies. More concretely, the gazes were a mixture of respect for Korean society and culture and a negatively distorted orientalist gaze. Ryotaro Shiba is a so-called “Japanese national writer” with a great influence on the Japanese people, and the characteristics of his outsider’s gaze are probably indicative of a gaze common to the Japanese people rather than of his own private gaze. Therefore, Ryotaro Shiba’s gaze toward Korea represented in Kara no Kuni Kiko holds significant literary geographical meanings. The results of this study suggest the need for further research on the characteristics of Japanese people’s gazes toward Korea as well as that represented in Japanese literature.
