「유화기연」은 남주인공 유춘과 여주인공 화소저의 기이한 인연에서 출발한다. 특히 유춘은 전생에서 소변을 잘못 배설한 이유로, 태어날 때 육체적 결함인 생식기가 없는 성 불구의 병인(病人)으로 태어난다. 이는 기존 고전소설에서는 매우 보기 드문 소재이다. 뿐만 아니라 성불구에서 완인(完人)으로 회복하는 과정도 매우 밀도있게 표현되고 있어서 이 자체만으로도 주목할 만하다. 더욱이 이 과정을 초월적인 힘이 아닌 옥낭(기생)이 물리적인 방법과 물리적인 치료를 담당하는 설정은 매우 현실적이라 할 수 있다. 또한 이 작품은 서사 중반부터 영웅성을 입증하기 위해 필수적인 군담 요소가 확대되어 진행되고 있다. 군담은 고전소설의 전형성과 대중성을 대표하는 소재이다. 하지만 군담적 서사는 가장 대중적임에도 불구하고, 매우 지루하고 장황하게 펼쳐지기 때문에 오히려 성불구 소재의 특이성마저 잠식하면서 독자들의 시선을 비껴간 것으로 추정된다. 「유화기연」은 전해지는 판본이 세책본(貰冊本)이기 때문에, 일단 인기가 있어야 하는 기본조건을 전제로 필사해야 상업적인 이윤을 남길 수 있었다. 그러나 이 작품은 세책본 1종과 활판본 1종 외에 다른 이본이 발견되지 않았다. 결과적으로 이본(異本)이 많다는 것은 인기가 많다라는 것을 전제로 하는데, 이 작품은 이본이 거의 없기 때문에 인기가 없었다는 것이 입증되는 셈이다. 본고는 바로 이 문제에서 논의를 출발하였다. 이 작품은 독특한 소재의 기이성과 군담요소인 대중성이 서사의 두 축임에도 당대 독자에게 큰 관심을 얻지 못했다. 그 이유를 분석한 결과 기이성과 대중성의 서투른 결합으로 보았다. 즉 남녀인연과 성적 불구를 회복하는 사건 및 군담의 확장이 유기적인 의미를 도출하지 못한 점이 이 작품의 한계라고 볼 수 있다. 하지만 여전히 이 작품은 작품 서두의 참신함, 혼례과정의 상세한 표현, 소상팔경에 대한 진풍경에 대한 묘사, 성적 불구를 치료하는 과정 등의 서사적 흥미요소를 볼 때 주목할 만한 작품이라고 평가한다.

Yuhwagiyeon deals with the strange destiny of its two main characters, Yuchun and Hwasojeo. In particular, Yuchun is born without a penis because he had urinated in the wrong place in his past life. This is very unique material for existing classical novels. Furthermore, the method by which his disability is cured is explained thoroughly, so it is worth giving our attention to this novel. In addition, it is pretty realistic that instead of using transcendental forces, Oknang (妓生) actually takes care of Yuchun and gives him physical therapy. From the middle of this novel, there are some essential factors for a war narrative which prove Yuchun to be heroic. Indeed, war narratives tend to resonate with the typicality and popularity of classical novels; however, although Yuhwagiyeon is a war narrative, the relevant events are described in a rather boring and tedious manner, and it seems this is why the novel did not get that much attention from readers in spite of its unique material. The edition of Yuhwagiyeon which has been passed on so far is from 貰冊本 (book rental shops). This means that the manuscripts in the shop had to be popular with readers in order to generate profits. However, Yuhwagiyeon has only one manuscript and one wookblock printed book. In a word, it is evident that this novel was not very popular in the past since there are not so many different editions left. This is the point that I started wondering about. Even though the novel has uniqueness and popularity, which are the two most important standards, it did not get that much attention from readers. Upon analyzing this, I concluded that these two standards did not combine well in the story. Specifically, this is novel is limited in that it does not reach the systematic meaning through the depiction of the main character`s destiny; how he overcomes his disability; and the expansion of the military story. However, this work is still regarded as a noteworthy novel, considering its originality at the beginning of the story; detailed descriptions of the wedding; unusual scenes of Sosangpalgyeong (소상팔경); and explanation of how Yuchun`s disability is treated.
