Abstract

The article considers the experience of development and creation of GIS, information and reference systems, databases and atlases for water objects of the Republic of Karelia and the North of the European part of Russia. It is necessary to develop geoinformation systems due to intensive use of natural resources: oil, gas, forest, water systems in Russian Federation that allow assessing the state of the territories in the interests of planning, their use for industry, construction, agriculture, recreation. The purpose of creating information and reference systems, databases, GIS, atlases is to use them to target economic activities, provide basic research, predict the impact of climatic and anthropogenic changes on ecosystems, and also to use it in education. We carried out reliable inventory work with the creation of electronic registers, which allow us to assess the current water-resource potential of the region. This task is actual both for Russia as a whole and for the lake region of the country – the Republic of Karelia. Information and reference systems (IRS) for water objects of the Republic of Karelia, as well as for the White Sea, in which include GIS elements were created, modern digital maps of regions were developed. GIS for the White Sea is a network resource created to work in GIS. A special GIS browser was developed for the system, which provided the receipt of the requested geo-project files and their subsequent processing in an autonomous mode by the ISS client. The specialized GIS and databases created in the NWPI of the KarRC RAS are aimed at solving practical problems related to water resources management, their protection and rational water use. The created information resources can become prototypes of similar information products for other regions of the Russian Federation.
