본고는 <명주보월빙>의 핵심 요괴인 여우 신묘랑의 특징과 서사적 의미를 고찰한 것이다. 신묘랑은 100권 중 50권에 걸쳐 등장할 정도로 서사적 비중이 크며, 인간과의 갈등을 조장하는 반동인물로써 중요한 역할을 한다. 신묘랑은 작중의 여타 요괴 및 다른 작품의 요괴와 비교했을 때, 두 가지 독자적인 면모를 보인다. 첫째, 신묘랑은 무려 열 명 이상의 악인들과 동모하여 총 8가지의 다채로운 작란을 벌인다. 둘째, 신묘랑은 자신이 선인을 결코 해칠 수 없다는 것을 자각했음에도 불구하고 그를 무시하여 천벌을 받는다. 그리고 이러한 두 가지 특징은 모두 재물욕에 기인한 것으로 나타난다. 신묘랑의 서사적 의미는 크게 세 가지로 나타난다. 첫째, 부질없는 욕망을 지닌 신묘랑을 통해 요괴의 어리석음을 강조한다. 둘째, 당대 소설 속에 신묘랑과 같은 여우 요괴가 악인의 대체물로써 선호되고 있었음을 보여준다. 셋째, 후편에 신묘랑의 부활을 예고함으로써 연작 의지를 표명한다.

This study examines the characteristics and narrative meaning of the key monster of MyongJuBoWallBing, fox Shinmyorang. Appearing in 50 out of the 100 episodes, Shinmyorang plays an important narrative role as well as serves as a reactionary character that causes conflicts with humans. Compared with other monsters in this novel and other stories, Shinmyorang has two unique aspects: First, Shinmyorang starts a total of 8 different battles by conspiring with more than ten villains. Second, Shinmyorang is punished by Heaven for disrespecting a virtuous man, even after realizing that he can never harm the man In addition, it is described that these two characteristics all come from a desire for wealth. The narrative meaning of Shinmyorang can be analyzed into three as follows: First, the foolishness of monsters is emphasized through the vain desire of Shinmyorang. Second, it shows that contemporary novels preferred fox monsters like Shinmyorang as substitutes for villains. Third, by previewing the revival of Shinmyorang at the end, the intention to write follow-up stories is disclosed.
