AB - The present study purposed to classify various themes observed in erotic clay figures of Moche based on Rafael’s research, to analyze eight types of postures as classified by Gebhard, to examine expression values emphasized by artisans who made the figures, and ultimately to understand ‘formative viewpoints intended by the erotic clay figures of Moche.’ According to thematic classification by Rafael, erotic figures are expressed in the forms of kiss, sexual intercourse, pregnancy and childbirth, oral sex, masturbation, nude, sodomy, exaggerated penis, punishment for sexual acts, sick persons’ sexual intercourse, animal sex, etc. In the thematic classification, we found that erotic figures are mainly human forms rather than humananimal forms observed frequently in Moche plastic clay earthenware and derived from the analysis that erotic clay figures were focused on human sex life rather than considering the divine world. On the other hand, through the eight postures of sexual intercourse classified by Gebhard, we found that the forms of the erotic clay figures express each artisan’s personality under ‘established principles.’ As individual inclinations are manifested by mass and texture expressed in the clay figures, it is presumed that clay figures used in the classification of postures were created not by a few specific artisans but by a large number of artisans. In research on the erotic clay figures of Moche, the background and social atmosphere in which they were created are not clear because there is no accurate information on the society and politics of Moche culture, but the figures are understood as ‘formative art works representing human sex life as if recording it’ and as one of important approaches that people have made to sex and art.
