본 연구는 빈도 높게 번역이 이루어지는 텍스트 장르인 연설문을 중심으로 텍스트 내 모호성을 해소하기 위해 번역사가 개입하여 의사소통을 달성하는 과정이 기계번역과 인간번역의 결과물에서 어떻게 차이가 나타나는지 비교하여 각 번역의 전략적 접근방식을 고찰하는데 그 목적이 있다. 번역은 의사소통의 달성이 목표이므로 번역사는 독자의 이해에 어려움으로 작용할 모호성을 해소하기 위해 개입한다. 그렇다면 번역 과정에서 기계 그리고 인간의 접근이 어떻게 차이가 있으며 그 차이에 영향을 미치는 요소는 무엇인지 분석한다면 효과적인 번역전략을 모색하는데 기여할 것이다. 국제회의에서 이루어진 연설문 5편을 분석하여 모호성을 분류하고 기계번역과 인간번역 결과물에서 전략의 차이와 그 원인을 분석했다. 분석 결과, 기계번역과 인간번역은 배경지식의 반영으로 인한 단어, 어휘, 문장구조의 선택에서 차이가 나타났다.

The purpose of this study is to conduct an analysis of how translator mediate to resolve ambiguity in speeches which is one of the most frequently translated text types; and compare how those ambiguous parts are dealt in machine and human translation. In particular, the study will focus on comparing the strategical differences in two types of translations. For the study, five speeches delivered at international conferences were analyzed to identify the types of ambiguity and their causes. The study looked into how machines and human can choose to deal with ambiguity differently and why. The analysis showed that human and machine translations differ with regard to the choices of vocabularies, expressions and syntactic style in translation as a result of applying different strategies in resolution of ambiguity.
