Since olden times, the area around Lake Biwa has prospered as an important transportation center, with many people constantly travelling through it. The area's gorgeous scenery has been passed on from generation to generation and never fails to enchant those who are lucky enough to view it.
This study looks at traditional roadscapes that confront Lake Biwa, classifying them according to their landscape type while comparing them to existeing landscapes in an attempt to plan new roadscapes that will take into account the enchanting view.
The results show that there are many traditional roadscapes in the Otsu area. These traditional roadscapes are generally enclosed by mountains or point toward Lake Biwa, and so we see that in recent years, construction of lakeside roads has led to the development of new types of roadscapes.
