제4차 산업혁명시대를 맞이하여 한국 사회도 빠르게 변화해가고 있다. 특히 미래를 예측할 수 없는 제4차 산업혁명시대에 미래의 인재를 키우는데 있어 중심적 역할을 담당해 온 교육은 무엇보다 훨씬 파괴적인 변화가 예견되고 있다. 이러한 변화의 시작으로 한국에서는 지금까지 학교교육에 비해 상대적으로 관심을 끌지 못했던 평생교육에 새롭게 관심을 보이고 있다. 즉 보수적이며, 수직적이고 폐쇄적인 학교교육 체제로는 빠르게 변화하는 제4차 산업혁명이 필요로 하는 인재를 양성하는 데는 한계가 있다고 보고, 상대적으로 변화에 좀 더 민첩하고, 유연하게 반응할 수 있는 평생교육에 관심이 쏠리고 있다.
그러나 이러한 관심에도 불구하고, 한국에서 평생교육이 제4차 산업혁명시대를 맞이하여 어떠한 역할을 해야 할지, 그리고 그러한 역할을 담당하기 위해 어떠한 준비가 필요한지 등에 대한 논의는 아직 활발하게 이루어지지 않고 있다. 이 연구에서는 이러한 논의의 시작으로 평생교육은 제4차 산업혁명을 위해 어떠한 인재를 키워야 할지, 또한 이러한 인재를 성공적으로 키우기 위해 평생교육이 해결해야 할 과제는 무엇인지를 알아본다.

In the period of the 4th Industrial Revolution, Korea has gone through many rapid changes. In particular, education as an institute of fostering future human resources, is expected to undergo more fundamental and "disruptive" changes because the 4th Industrial Revolution would demand different human resources from the ones in the previous Industrial Revolutions. In this context, more attention is paid to lifelong education in that school education has limitations in responding to rapid social changes that the 4th Industrial Revolution has brought about.
Lifelong education in Korea was introduced as an alternative to rigidly and hierarchically structured school education. Since then, however, lifelong education in Korea has not been well developed to fulfill the expectation set at the beginning. As the 4th Industrial Revolution is moving forward at the fast speed, lifelong education is asked to play the role of fostering human resources more actively. Nevertheless, in Korea, no serious discussion is taking place on what kind of human resources lifelong education should develop and what kind of approaches it should take to make the direction of the 4th Industrial Revolution more human-oriented.
In this study, as an attempt to initiate this discussion, the author investigates what the 4th Industrial Revolution means, what features it has, and what roles education should play in the period of the 4th Industrial Revolution. Also, the author examines what kind of human resources lifelong education should develop for the 4th Industrial Revolution and in specific, what abilities and capacities lifelong education should emphasize, and how differently lifelong education should approach to it. Lastly, the author figures out what problems lifelong education has to act as an important form of education for the 4th Industrial Revolution and what changes are needed to resolve them.
