Primarily a Eurasian species, two subspecies of the White Wagtail have bred in western Alaska: M. alba ocularis and M. a. lugens (formerly the "Black-backed" Wagtail). M. a. ocularis breeds annually in small numbers from St. Lawrence Island and the Norton Sound coast of the Seward Peninsula north along the coasts of both the Bering and Chukchi seas to Cape Lisburne. M. a. lugens has occasionally nested near Nome and on Attu Island, in the western Aleutian Islands.
