이 연구는 『기효신서』가 조선후기 수군에 도입된 경위와 그 정도를 밝히는 데 목적이 있다. 임진왜란 당시에 수용된 병서인 『기효신서』는 조선 후기 군사제도의 변화에 막대한 영향을 주었다. 그런데 지금까지 『기효신서』 도입 논의는 주로 육군을 중심으로 진행되어 수군이 『기효신서』를 어떻게 수용해 왔는지는 여전히 연구사적 공백으로 남아 있다. 이 연구는 이러한 연구사적인 공백을 메우고 수군의 제도 변화에 대한 이해를 심화하기 위해 기획되었다. 이와 같은 목적을 달성하기 위해 이 연구에서는 『기효신서』를 編制, 군선(군선의 승선인원까지 포함), 훈련 등으로 구분하여 내용을 정리하고, 이를 조선후기 수군의 운용 방식과 비교하는 방법을 활용해 보고자 한다. 이를 통해 조선 정부는 자연환경과 당시 수군의 상황을 고려해서 『기효신서』의 내용을 선택적으로 수용하여 수군의 전술을 발전시키고자 했음을 밝히고자 한다.

The objective of the current study is to survey the introduction and acceptance of Gihyoshinseo by the Joseon Navy after the Japanese Invasion of 1592. The ruling class of Joseon in the aftermath of the war did not trust the previously established military system of their country. This led to the introduction of military strategy textbooks in new styles and used them to completely reform the organization of the troops. Gihyoshinseo was the strategy textbook that was adopted by the Joseon military in this process. Under this situation, it was impossible for Joseon Navy to not accept this military strategy textbook, but the method of implementing the contents of the textbook differed between the Army and the Navy. The current study divides the contents of Jusa Chapter in Gihyoshinseo into parts about organization, warships, training, and operation to analyze them. Based on this information, the contents of the book are compared to the actual operation of the Navy of the Late Joseon Era. Through this attempt, the current study seeks to elucidate the degree to which the Navy of the Late Joseon Era introduced and accepted the contents of Gihyoshinseo.
