리차드 로티(Richard Rorty)는 신실용주의 철학의 연장선에서 자유주의 정치사상을 옹호한다. 그러나 로티가 지지하는 자유주의는 칸트의 계몽적 합리주의 전통보다는 헤겔의 역사적 맥락과 공동체적 배경을 존중하는 입장을 가리킨다. 합리주의 철학을 부정하는 대안으로서 로티는 문예비평의 철학을 제시한다. 이 세계에서 대담한 시인은 기존에 존재하는 어휘를 재서술함으로써 문화변동과 도덕의 진보를 선도하는 문예비평 시대의 영웅이다. 이 논문의 목적은 로티의 철학에서 핵심적 역할을 하는 대담한 시인을 재해석하는 것이다. 기존의 연구들은 대담한 시인이 지성인 계층에 한정된 점에 주목하여 대담한 시인의 엘리트주의적 성격을 비판했다. 우리의 연구는 기존의 해석들에 반대하여 평범한 시민들 역시 대담한 시인이 될 수 있음을 주장할 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 로티의 저작들에 근거하여 대담한 시인의 특징들을 살펴보고 로티 주장을 재해석하여 평범한 시민들이 대담한 시인이 될 수 있음을 이끌어낸다. 그리고 대담한 시인으로서 시민들이 어떻게 문화변동과 도덕의 진보를 선도할 수 있는가를 밝힌다

Richard Rorty defends his political liberalism as an extension of neo-pragmatism. His liberalism follows Hegelian tradition, which considers historical context and communitarian background as important, rather than Kantian tradition, which stems from Enlightenment rationalism. Breaking with Enlightenment rationalism, Rorty suggests philosophy of literary criticism as an alternative to Enlightenment rationalism. In his world, a strong poet who leads cultural transformation or moral progress by redescribing new vocabularies becomes a new cultural hero. Main purpose of this article is to reinterpret the strong poet’s birth and role in Rorty’s political thought. Earlier studies have criticized the strong poet’s elitist characteristics. However, our research, against the previous studies on the strong poet, argues that the strong poet is not always originated in elitist class and can be born among ordinary citizens, and explains how citizen as a strong poet can transform moral sentiment and cultural conditions with its new vocabularies. To support our argument, this article consists of three part. Firstly, based on Rorty’s works, the strong poet’s roles and characteristics in his idea are analyzed. Secondly, by reinterpreting Rorty’s texts, we argue that ordinary citizen can be the strong poet in his thought. Thirdly, we show how citizen as the strong poet can lead moral progress and cultural transformation.
