본 논문의 연구 목적은 수전 손택의 『은유로서의 질병』을 통하여 한국 사회와 한국 문학을 되짚어보는 것이다. 그것을 통해 우리가 ‘질병의 은유’를 벗어날 수 있는가의 문제를 검토하게 될 것이다. 수전 손택은 ‘질병의 은유’가 질병의 본질을 가리고 치료를 방해하며, 환자들을 오히려 외롭게 만든다고 보았다. 그녀가 특별히 주목한 것은 결핵과 암, 에이즈였다. 수전 손택에 따르면, 결핵은 낭만으로, 암과 에이즈는 공포의 은유가 덧씌워졌었다. 한국 문학에서도 결핵은 낭만으로 인식되곤 하였다. 암이나 전염병은 ‘공포’의 대상이 되곤 하였다. 질병이 질병 그 자체가 아니라 은유적으로 활용되는 것, 혹은 과장된 공포심의 유발로 연결되는 것은 질병에 대한 원인을 제대로 모르거나, 그것을 쉽게 극복할 수 없을 때 자연스럽게 나타나는 현상이다. 사실 질병은 기본적으로 낯선 것이다. 최근 유행했던 ‘메르스’의 경우를 생각해보자. 메르스는 질병 그 자체의 전염성이 높아서, 공포와 두려움이 컸던 것도 사실이다. 메르스 유행의 과정에서, 메르스는 국가 시스템의 붕괴를 드러냈고, 유행이 지나간 뒤에 남녀 성별간 혐오 담론을 확산시키는 촉매가 되기도 했다. 기본적으로, 질병의 은유를 극복해야 질병 자체에 다가갈 수 있다는 수전 손택의 입장에 동의한다. 그러나 더욱 복잡해진 현대 사회에서 질병은 여전히 은유의 대상일 수밖에 없는 측면이 있다. 사회의 질병, 혹은 사회가 질병을 바라보는 인식 자체를 비판적으로 고찰하기 위해, 우리는 다시 '질병의 은유'를 활용하게 된다.

This study aims at exploring the Korean society and literature using Illness as Metaphor and AIDS and Its Metaphor by Susan Sontag. In addition, it examines whether we can overcome the limitation of ‘metaphor of illness’ or not. According to Sontag, the metaphor of illness hides the essence of illness, interferes with the remedy and isolates the patients. She writes about notice at tuberculosis, cancer, and AIDS, saying that romance pertains to tuberculosis and fear pertains to cancer and AIDS as metaphors. In the Korean literature, tuberculosis is also portrayed through romance, whereas cancer and AIDS scare the public. Generally, when people do not know the cause of illness or cannot overcome, they utilize it as a metaphor or exaggerate it fearfully. In fact, illness is always unknown and frightening. Let us consider the case of MERS, is highly infectious disease that scares people greatly. During the infective stage, MERS led to a collapse of the national system. After the epidemic, MERS catalyzed the hate discourse between genders. However, illness should still be the object of metaphor in these more complicated times. We can utilize the ‘metaphor of illness’ again to critically consider the social perception of illness.
