Abstract

A patient’s autobiographical account of being cared for and not being cared for was elucidated by hermeneutical text interpretation. Two assumptions were made. Being cared for means a present carer who listens to their heart, has love in their hands, and speaks with a warm voice, which is understood as an ethos with an inner combination of head, hand, and heart. Caritas becomes evident and visible in praxis. Not being cared for means an absent carer who is not totally there, has insensitive hands, and does not listen.
