초록

In this study, we look at the relationship between form and function in general and those between the forms of Korean topic and their functions in particular. For this purpose, the present study is based on the polar system(marked vs. unmarked) studied by Myhill(1992) and especially Chu(1998). Korean, as a topic-prominent language like Chinese, uses the same sets of forms to serve similar functions as Chinese does, in spite of the structural differences between the two languages. Therefore, our discussion sometimes includes chinese examples compared with the corresponding Korean forms. In this way we can provide a unified explanation for Korean topics in terms of markedness.
