Abstract
Intersectionality and Social Inclusion: The Egg... of Troy. Part 2: The Trojan Horse
Intersectionality is an approach to social diversity that promises to take into account the complexity and dynamics of societal divisions and to support inclusive intervention practices. The intersectional approach appears to offer novel analysis of problems, interventions and modes of interaction in various professional areas, including social work, health promotion and counseling. In this regard, as was argued in the first part of this article that was published in the former volume, intersectionality appears to be the Egg of Columbus for experts in social and individual intervention, especially at the micro level.
However, in this second part of the article, we argue that the intersectional approach may also be a Trojan Horse, because it is not yet clear how the complexity it involves may be managed at the level of social systems. This is especially true for public policy and the practices of organizations to monitor equality. Moreover, the production of evidence based knowledge as the gold standard for intervention practices proves to be difficult due to the implications of intersectionality for research methods. Nevertheless, intersectionality may be a very useful heuristic in addressing issues of social inclusion.
Intersectionaliteit en sociale inclusie: Het Ei... van Troje. Deel 2: Het Paard van Troje
In het denken over maatschappelijke diversiteit staat “intersectionaliteit” voor een benadering die belooft recht te doen aan de complexiteit en dynamiek van maatschappelijke verschillen en die belooft inclusieve interventiepraktijken te bevorderen. De intersectionele benadering blijkt te inspireren tot nieuwe probleemanalyses, interventies en omgangsvormen in uiteenlopende professionele werksoorten – waaronder welzijnswerk, gezondheidsbevordering en hulpverlening. In het eerste deel van dit artikel, dat in het vorige nummer van dit tijdschrift is gepubliceerd, is dan ook uiteengezet dat intersectionaliteit het Ei van Columbus voor interventiekundigen lijkt te zijn.
In dit tweede deel van het artikel wordt beargumenteerd dat de intersectionele benadering op termijn echter het Paard van Troje kan blijken te zijn. Met name voor beleid en wetgeving omdat het een complexiteit binnenbrengt waarvan nog niet duidelijk is hoe die moet worden gehanteerd. Bovendien kleven er onderzoeksmethodologische implicaties aan, waardoor de gewenste wetenschappelijke evidentie maar moeilijk tot stand komt. Niettemin kan intersectionaliteit voorlopig een buitengewoon nuttige heuristiek zijn voor vraagstukken van sociale inclusie.
