Abstract

In addition to the well-known and well-restored early biographical Dutch films, Ivo Blom researches another series of early 'views' of the Netherlands, hitherto hardly researched by Dutch historians. These films include street shots of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and recordings of media events involving Queen Wilhelmina and Paul Kruger. Blom cobmines an analysis of the visual material with research into the historical context of the production and reception, and as result identifies the films to be productions by Anton Nöggerath Sr. He then traces the afterlife of these films to the Netherlands Centraal Filmarchief (Central Dutch Film archives), a private initiative that was set up in the 1920s, and which was a forerunner to the Filmmuseum and Beeld en Geluid (Sound and Vision). (Part II follows in TMG 2011-1).
