Objective

The main objective of THEMISTO is to study the 3-D distribution of zooplankton and micronekton in relation to physical physical features and climate. The project proposes to use active acoustics as a tool to measure the distribution and densities of organisms. Through the continuous collection of measurements by the EK80 echosounder (at 5 frequencies, from more than 1000m depth for the 18kHz to 200m for the 200kHz) during the Reunion-Crozet-Kerguelen-Amsterdam-Reunion transits, the purposes are to i) distinguish groups and species of zooplankton and micronekton and ii) characterize the variability of their distribution in 3-D over a large latitudinal gradient (from tropical to polar regions). Physical processes is studied simultaneously (mainly in-situ thermosalinograph data and satellite image analysis), allowing to define critical multi-scale habitats of key species of the southern Indian Ocean ecosystems. Including a methodological development part to take the best advantage of the new onboard equipment and benefiting from collaborations (including REPCCOAI and OISO on the Obsaustral campaigns at the national level and MOBYDICK and MESOPP (Mesopelagic Southern Ocean Prey and Predators) at the international level), the results obtained allow a better understanding of the pelagic ecosystems but also the contribution of these informations in terms of assimilation into trophic models and conservation through spatial planning.
