Inequalities in the Trajectory of Depressive Symptoms and Its Associated Factors :

  • 682

This study aims to examine whether there are inequalities in the trajectory of depressive symptoms and its associated factors. We used latent growth curve modeling involving 13,766 individuals aged 19 and over as of 2006 who participated in the Korean Welfare Panel Study from 2006 to 2013. Major findings are as follows. 1) Results of unconditional model showed that, on average, the trajectory of depressive symptoms decreased over the 8 years of study period. 2) Multi-group unconditional models showed that the trajectory varied by individuals’ socio- demographic characteristics. Females, those with less than high school education, under middle class income, without occupation, those in rural area presented higher levels of depressive symptoms in 2006; but, they decreased depressive symptoms faster than their counterparts showing declining gaps over time. By contrast, older adults aged 60 and over presented higher levels of depressive symptoms in 2006 and presented slower declining speed over time compared to younger generations, showing aggravating gaps with time. 3) Results of conditional model showed that the inequalities in the trajectory of depressive symptoms varied by exogenous variables, presenting about three notable types: ① inequality maintained (i.e., gender, education, spouse, and volunteer experience), ② inequality mitigated (i.e., income, family conflict, resident environment, and self-esteem), and ③ inequality aggravated (i.e., age, occupation, regions) These findings indicate that socio-demographic characteristics are critical to the inequality in the trajectory of depressive symptoms. Based on the findings, implications for policy and practice were discussed.
