Abstract:
Knowledge of the incompatibility alleles of European hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) cultivars is essential for selecting parental combinations in breeding and choosing pollinizers for orchards. In this study, we used fluorescence microscopy to identify the incompatibility alleles expressed in the pollen of Turkish hazelnut cultivars. Cultivars and tester plants in Giresun, Ankara, and Corvallis were used. Branches of the testers were bagged in December, and pollen was collected from them in January. Compatible crosses produced masses of long tubes while incompatible crosses produced very short tubes which often curved or ended with a pronounced bulb. The incompatibility alleles S2, S5, S8, S10, S12 and S21 were identified in the pollen of Turkish cultivars.
