Abstract:
The grapevine germplasm bank located at ‘El Encín’ (Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, Spain) (BGVCAM) was established around 1950 (Cabello 1995), and it contains a total of 1066 Vitis vinifera accessions.
From the conservation of Vitis germplasm biodiversity viewpoint, this bank has a very marked importance, since most of the autochthonous Spanish varieties are included.
At the present time, only 16 Vitis vinifera varieties represent almost 90% of the production of wine grapes and other 26 varieties complete up to 99% of the production (Hidalgo 1993). Consequently, the genetic erosion and the lost of variability is one of the main problems that face the Viticulture in Spain as well as it occurs in many other countries.
