A Study of MASAOKA Shiki’s EssaysOn this dissertation I will describe the thesis of MASAOKA Shiki, the Japanese famous poet who died before a hundred year ago, especially on studying his big three essays before his die(Bokujyu-itteki, Gyouga-manroku, and Byosho-rokushaku). I reclaim the new academic field not on his poetical works, but on his prose. We can see the sentences like pictures and the pictures like sentences. His skill and art in his sentences is full with the skill of drawing pictures like sketches. We can also see the colors(red=aka, purple=murasaki, white=siro) light and shade in his compositions of the sentences clearly. It depends on his claim of Shasei. There are so many rhythmus of poetry in his important essays waving peculiar literary common sensibility. The pictures in his big three essays are composed with so picturesque expressions with the skill of Shasei, and as a result the essays are created so precisely. Shiki creates his sentences with writing so precisely with his opinion, the points of Shasei. And he includes the poetry(haiku and tanka) so lyrically with concerning the subjects of his thought. So we can see the mixed atmospheres in his sentences with prose and poetry. The internal principles or elements in the pictures which are composed with lines, colors(red=aka, purple=murasaki, white=siro), and forms are formed in his sentences as an allegory, and included with poetry of Shasei, and composed with epical sentences with lyricism. So to speak, his essays are composed with pictures and internal principles.
