본고에서는 우선 브렉시트 관련 기사에 대한 신문지면의 기계적 편향을 측정하였고, 둘째, 신문의 브렉시트 관련 의제 선택 경향을 측정하였으며, 셋째, 공식투표 기간 중 브렉시트 관련 주요이슈에 대한 보도 편향의 고급기사 정도를 분석하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 영국 3대 일간지인 타임스(The Times), 텔레그라프(The Daily Telegraph), 가디언(the Guardian) 내 주요이슈에 관한 정파적 편향을 분석하였다.
제한된 기간 내 3개 신문사의 기계적 정파 편향을 측정한 결과, 가디언지만이 EU 잔류 지지에 관한 정파 편향 기사가 보도되었으며, 주제 선정에서는 3개 신문 모두 투표 관련 기사에 집중된 보도를 하였다. 주제별로는 투표 등 기타에서 텔레그라프가 탈퇴지지를 가디언이 잔류지지의 편향을 보였다. 또한 국내경제 관련 주제에서 타임스 및 가디언이 잔류지지 편향의 기사를 작성하였다. 국민투표 5일 전 신문 3사의 1면 기사 분석 결과, 타임스는 60%, 텔레그라프 60%, 가디언은 100% 균형성 측면의 고급기사를 작성한 것으로 분석된다. 따라서 브렉시트 주제 주요이슈에 관한 담론의 내용에서 영국 3개 신문의 유럽화와 관련한 정파적 편향 관점에서 기사를 작성하고 있으면서도 ‘정당한 불편부당성'을 비교적 확보하여 관련 기사를 보도해 왔음을 알 수 있다.
In this paper, at first we measured the mechanical bias of newspapers on articles related to the Brexit. Second, we measured the tendency of the newspapers to select the agenda related to the Brexit. And third, we analyzed the level of news articles on major issues related to the Brexit during the official referendum campaign period. For this purpose, this study analyzed the political bias on the major issues in the three major daily newspapers, The Times, The Daily Telegraph, and the Guardian. As a result of measuring the mechanistic political bias of three newspapers within a limited time period, the Guardian was only published politically biased news articles on supporting stay in EU. In the topic selection, all three newspapers focused on articles related to referendum. Analyzing by the topic, on the topic of others including referendum The Daily Telegraph showed the bias on supporting Brexit, on the other hand, the Guardian showed the bias on remaining in EU. And on the topic related to domestic economy the Times and the Guardian published articles which support remaining in EU. Five days before the referendum, as a result of analysing the front page of three newspapers, the Times and the Telegraph published high level article as 60% in the point of balance, at the same time, the Guardian showed high level article as 100% in the point of balance. Therefore, it can be seen from the contents of the discourse on the main issue of the Brexit that the three Britain new papers have been writing articles from the politically biased point as well as relatively writing articles based on ‘due impartiality’.
