Voorafgaand aan het onderzoek werden de resten van Lutjeschardam, een nederzetting uit de 17de eeuw verwacht en in de kern van het dijklichaam een kleine middeleeuwse dijk uit de 12de of 13de eeuw. Deze kleine laatmiddeleeuwse zeewering zou in de loop der tijd zijn uitgegroeid tot de grote brede dijk van vandaag de dag. Grote stukken van de huidige waterkerende dijken zoals de Schardammer Keukendijk en het merendeel van de Westfriese Omringdijk zijn inlaagdijken. Bij een inlaging werd de plek van de oude dijk verlaten om landinwaarts een nieuwe waterkerend dijklichaam op te werpen. In dit deel van de Klamdijk zou echter de oudste fase van de Omringdijk nog aanwezig zijn en voor het eerst onderzocht kunnen worden. De overblijfselen van de nederzetting Lutjeschardam werden inderdaad gevonden, maar tegen de verwachting in kwam in de kern een groot homogeen pakket tevoorschijn van brokken bruine humeuze klei, afgewisseld met gelaagde zoden van grijze klei en veen tevoorschijn. Deze laag werd geïnterpreteerd als de resten van een reparatie na een laatmiddeleeuwse dijkdoorbraak.
