이 논문의 목적은 은유적 합성명사의 의미가 그것과 결합하는 서술어와의 관계를 통해 결정된다는 것을 밝히는 것이다. 그동안 인지언어학은 주로 합성명사 자체의 의미구성을 다루어왔다. 특히 인지언어학에서는 그동안 합성명사의 두 구성요소 중에서 통사적 결정권을 가진 머리어(N₂) 중심의 형태통사론적 설명을 극복하고, 수식어(N₁)가 전체 구성에서 차지하는 의미적인 역할을 적극적으로 강조해 왔다. 하지만 합성명사의 진정한 의미 해석은 서술어와의 결합관계를 통해 이루어진다. 첫째, 합성명사를 혼성이론적으로 설명할 때, 혼성공간에서의 서술어와의 결합관계를 통해 합성명사의 혼성공간에서 현저화되는 의미 대응이 결정된다. 둘째, 어떤 서술어와 결합하느냐에 따라 합성명사의 앞뒤 요소 중에서 활성화되는 것이 달라진다. 은유적 합성명사는 이중 지시작용을 가지며, 결합관계를 통해 이에 대한 의미 고정 과정을 거친다. 또한 서술어에 따라 합성명사의 내부 구조에 대한 분석가능성이 있다는 점은, 기존에 합성명사는 지시적 섬을 이루어 더 이상 내부구조를 분석할 수 없다는 기존의 주장에 중요한 반론이 될 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to prove that meanings of metaphoric compound words are determined by their relations with the verbs combined with them. So far, Cognitive Linguistics has mainly focused on meaning construction itself of metaphoric compound words. Especially it has gone through the morph-syntactic account focusing on Syntactic header(N₂), one of the two components of metaphoric compound words, which has syntactic determination, and has emphasized on the semantic roles of modifiers(N₁). However, the true semantic interpretation of metaphoric compound words comes out when we count their syntagmatic relations with verbs. Firstly, when Metaphoric Compound Words are explained by a blending theory, their semantic correspondences are determined through syntagmatic relations with verbs, and these correspondences become noticeable in blending space of Metaphoric Compound Words. Secondly, which one between beginning component and end component of metaphoric compound words activates depends on which verbs are combined with them. Metaphoric compound words have dual references and go through process of fixing meanings through syntagmatic relations. In addition, the fact that it is possible to analyze the inner structures of metaphoric compound words depending on the verbs combined is a good counter argument against the conventional theory that they can not be analyzed because the metaphoric compound words make referential islands.
