초록

Due to the development of multimedia, the role of language in mass media has been challenged by other semiotic resources. As such, we need to consider not only texts but also images when translating. The aim of this paper is to analyze changes relating to the interpersonal function - one of three metafunctions of movie posters - occurring during translating. For data analysis, 34 pairs of original Korean movie posters and their English-translated counterparts were selected. Two fundamental and relevant social semiotic theories - Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics for text analysis and Kress and van Leeuwen’s visual grammar for image analysis - were employed in the analysis. This paper analyzed the interpersonal function of texts and images in Korean posters, respectively, and examined how these functions have been changed in English-translated posters. This paper also analyzed the factors that may have resulted in such changes. The findings are that the functions of texts and images have been changed in a similar way. The interpersonal function of texts in original Korean posters works in a way to build a very close relationship with viewers. In English-translated posters, however, interpersonal function represents distant relations between poster designers (or speakers in the poster) and viewers. The interpersonal function of images has also been changed like that of texts. Therefore, we find that the interpersonal function of texts and images has changed in a similar manner and that they are indeed linked.
