임진전쟁 초기, 청주지역의 의병들은 鄕保義兵과 勤王義兵의 성격을 모두 가졌다. 박춘무 · 박춘번 · 박동명 · 이시발 · 조강 · 정약 · 김선복 · 박우현 · 박사현 · 신용 · 박춘란 등이 청주지역 의병장이었다. 청주지역 의병장들은 學脈과 婚脈으로 연결되어, 의병진을 꾸렸다. 청주지역에서 가장 먼저 창의한 인물은 박춘무였다. 박춘무는 송제민의 권유로 창의하여, 김천일 · 고경명 · 조헌의 의병진과 연대하였다. 박춘무와 비슷한 시기에 조강도 자신의 사회경제적 기반을 바탕으로 보은 · 회인 일대에서 창의하였다. 전쟁이 장기화되면서, 일본군은 군량의 확보와 보급을 위해 전라도를 공략하였다. 이 과정에서 금산성이 일본군에게 함락 당했다. 조헌은 금산성의 배후를 확보하기 위해, 7월 말에 청주성 탈환 전투에 합세하였다. 조헌 · 박춘무 · 영규 · 이옥 등이 지휘하는 연합군은 8월 1일에 일제히 청주성을 공격하여, 8월 2일에 청주성을 탈환하였다. 청주성을 탈환한 후, 박춘무 의병진은 진천·괴산 일대에서 활동하다가 한양 일대로 활동무대를 옮겼다. 조강의 의병진은 혼란한 상황과 학맥의 차이로 청주성 탈환 전투에 참여하지 못했으나, 청주 송령에서 일본군을 격퇴한 후, 죽산으로 올라와 큰 전공을 세웠다. 청주성 탈환은 8월 1일 단 하루 만에 이루어낸 결과가 아니라, 한 달 여간 지속된 전투의 결과였다. 그 과정에서 조헌 · 영규의 의병진뿐만 아니라, 박춘무 · 박우현 · 김선복 · 박사현 등이 이끈 청주지역의 의병진도 큰 역할을 하였다. 조강 의병진은 혼란한 전황과 학맥의 차이로 청주성 전투에 참여하지 못했지만, 또 다른 의병진과 연대하여 의병활동을 하였다. 그 결과 일본군의 중요 거점이었던 죽산 일대에서 승리를 거두어, 도성을 수복하는데 일정한 기여를 하였다.
Although the righteous army in Cheongju area was local righteous armies for protecting families and homelands, they were gradually transformed to loyal righteous armies as they collaborated with those in other areas. Park Chunmu, Park Chunbeon, Park Dongmyeong, Lee Sibal, Jo Gang, Jeong Yak, Kim Seonbok, Park Uhyeon, Park Sahyeon, Sinyong and Park Chunran were righteous army commanders in Cheongju area during the period of Imjin war. They were connected through scholastic(學脈) and marriageable veins(婚脈). It was Park Chunmu who created a righteous army first in Cheongju area. Park Chunmu was recommended by Song Jemine to create the army, both of whom studied under the same teacher, Lee Jiham, joined up with righteous army camps of Kim Cheonl, Go Gyeongmyeong and Jo Heon. As the war was prolonged, Japanese army attacked Jeolla-do, in order to secure and supply provisions. In the process, the Geumsan fortress was fallen by Japanese army. In order to secure the back of the Geumsan fortress, Jo Heon participated in the strategy to occupy the Cheongju fortress, in late July. The allied forces attacked the Cheongju fortress all at once on August, 1 and took back it on August, 2. After the recapture of the Cheongju fortress, Jo Heon and Park Chunmu led to Geumsan and Jincheon, respectively. After achieving a great victory, Park Chunmu developed righteous army movement in the whole place of Goisan and Jincheon, until 1593 (Seonjo 26). Jo Gang’s righteous army camp could not participate in the Cheongju fortress battle, primarily because of different scholastic veins of righteous army commanders. Although Jo Gang’s righteous army camp could not participate in the Cheongju fortress battle, it moved to Juksan and rendered distinguished military services, after repulsing Japanese army in the Songryeong battle. The recapture of the Cheongju fortress was not the outcome achieved in a day, August, 1 but that of the battle which continued for about a month. In the process, not only righteous army camps of Jo Heon and Yeong Gyu, but also those led by Park Chunmu, Park Uhyeon, Kim Seonbok and Park Sahyeon in Cheongju area play significant roles. Although Jo Gang’s righteous army camp could not participated in the Cheongju fortress battle, due to chaotic war situations and different scholastic veins, it developed righteous army movement by cooperating with other camps, with the aim of being loyal to the king. Therefore, it made a contribution to the recapture of the capital city, by winning a victory in the whole place of Juksan, a key point of Japanese army.
