The 17th IUPAC Conference on Organometallic Chemistry Directed Towards Organic Synthesis (OMCOS 17) will be held in Fort Collins, CO, USA from Sunday July 28 to Thursday August 1, 2013. Nestled at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, the meeting will feature 33 Plenary Lectures, Invited Lectures, and Short Talks. A rich and scientifically diverse poster session during the conference will complement the main lectures.
This conference stands in part to commemorate the beginnings of the OMCOS. In 1981, Louis S. Hegedus and the late John K. Stille organized the first OMCOS and held it on the campus of Colorado State University. Hegedus and Stille recognized the potential impact that the burgeoning field of organometallics could have on synthesis and saw the need to assemble researchers from around the world for a conference dedicated to the topic. Indeed, future Nobel Laureates Ryoji Noyori and Ei-ichi Negishi spoke at that first meeting, and attendance far exceeded Hegedus and Stille’s modest expectations. Since its inception, the meeting has stood as a premier international event to recognize and discuss the most forefront, cutting-edge science in the field of organometallic chemistry in organic synthesis.
OMCOS has grown to be a biennial meeting held all over the world. From Fort Collins in 1981, the meeting has traveled to Dijon (1983), Kyoto (1985), Vancouver (1987), Florence (1989), Utrecht (1991), Kobe (1993), Santa Barbara (1995), Göttingen (1997), Versailles (1999), Taipei (2001), Toronto (2003), Geneva (2005), Nara (2007), Glasgow (2009), and Shanghai (2011). The meeting is typically characterized by the attendance of a thousand international scientists consisting of academic and industrial chemists, students, and postdoctoral associates.

OMCOS Award
The conference will also feature the conferral of the OMCOS Award, a prize given biennially to a prominent researcher in the field of organometallic chemistry directed towards organic synthesis. It is our great pleasure to announce that the 2013 OMCOS prize will be awarded to Professor Zhang-Jie Shi of Peking University. Professor Shi will present the OMCOS Award lecture in Fort Collins at the meeting.
Poster Session/Short Talks
The poster session will be held in the evening of Monday, July 29. A deadline of May 31, 2013 is set for poster submission. It is the tradition of OMCOS to have Short Talks constitute a significant portion of the scientific program. Short Talks will be selected from the poster abstracts submitted by the deadline.

Excursions/Events
Along with the full scientific program, several events are planned to provide opportunities both for further discussion and the chance to explore northern Colorado. A welcome reception is scheduled on Sunday evening at the Fort Collins Hilton, and the OMCOS Banquet will be held on Wednesday evening at the Fort Collins Drake Center. A number of excursions (whitewater rafting, hiking at Rocky Mountain National Park, or touring the Anheuser-Busch and New Belgium breweries) offer great occasions to see more of the Rocky Mountain region.
