Abstract

The decolorization of Methylene Blue has been studied in aqueous solutions in the presence of Titania nanocrystalline films alone or with added Fe2+ ions and a surplus of Hydrogen Peroxide. Thus photodecolorization could be obtained either by heterogeneous or combined heterogeneous and homogeneous (Photo-Fenton) photocatalysis. The combination of the two processes resulted in a large increase of the decolorization rate, which was explained by the role played by Titania in adsorbing Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions and reducing Fe3+ ions by excited electrons thus continuously feeding the Photo-Fenton reaction.
