abstract

In 1571 the distinguished Venetian diplomat Antonio Tiepolo was officially appointed ambassador extraordinary to the court of Philip II to represent the Venetian Republic on the occasion of the king’s marriage to Anna of Austria. The real purpose of his visit was to urge the Spanish king to support the league against their common Turkish enemy, wich was also the reason for his visit to the Portuguese court. The embassy trip journal, whose author is unknown (Costantino Garzoni?), is an exceptional source of valuable information about the Iberian peninsula and the politics of the period.
