On the Emerging of a New Function of Jiùshì as Discourse Marker in Authentic SpeechChinese Full Text

Abstract: In authentic speech a new function of jiùshì（就是） has emerged,i.e.it can serve as a discourse marker which can be classified into three types:1) a response marker expressing intensive and satisfactory agreement;2) the beginner of a turn-taking to introduce a new turn and foregrounding the topic;and 3) a pause filler holding the floor to draw the listener ’ s attention to the contents of the discourse.Its high frequency and interactive nature are important factors to usher in the new function of jiùshì.
