Abstract: Chinese earthen sites located in humid environments,especially the prehistoric sites that bear direct witness to the origins of Chinese civilization,have important historical,artistic,and cultural value,and are important objects to protect.This paper analyzes the causes and types of deterioration of earthen sites in humid environments,summarizes the main problems,explores ideas about the preservation of such sites,analyzes the necessary technologies for their preservation,and finally comes to the following conclusions: Water is the key problem;controlling the water sources can change the problems of earthen sites in humid environments into those of arid environments;earthen sites in humid environments can be divided into exhibitory and non exhibitory types,and different types require different preservation measures;early preservation intervention will promote the overlapping of archaeology and preservation and will protect the sites to the maximum extent;a combination of chemical and physical consolidating methods leads to an integrated technology for consolidating exhibitory archaeological sites,and this will be developed for future preservation of earthen sites in humid environments.
