Willa Cather's first full-fledged literary apprenticeship came as Managing Editor of a women's domestic magazine where her writing germinated within the strictly defined genres of nineteenth-century popular journalism. However, critical neglect of these early writings and a serious error of fact, perpetuated by generations of scholars, have obscured these important influences on her early development.
