Popular biographies often are based on rumor, gossip, and falsehoods. Publishers pay millions of dollars to their authors. In the absence of any code of ethics for biographers, the lure of wealth and fame is apt to attract increasing numbers of writers. Formulating and promulgating the ethical standards of biographical publications are needed to protect their future quality.
