Abstract: For detecting the ultra-high frequency(UHF) signals generated from electrical equipment partial discharges(PDs), we designed a fractal antenna that integrates the fractal technology and the coplanar waveguide technology to achieve ultra-wide-band characteristics. Meanwhile, we optimized the geometrical parameters of the antenna through simulation. Moreover, we constructed a test platform to test the practical application of the antenna. The simulation results indicate that this antenna has a wide frequency band of 0.4~1 GHz in terms of the voltage standing wave ratio(VSWR) smaller than 2, as well as great directivity and omnidirectional radiation feature. Besides, the antenna has a high gain, about 1.5 dB, and a small size with thickness of 1 mm. The test results show that the antenna has high gain and high noise-signal ratio, and it is effective in collecting PD UHF signals from 0.4 GHz to 1 GHz. Hence the proposed antenna is quite promising for PD on-line detection applications.
