Abstract: In order to detect arc fault in the line, a novel arc fault identification algorithm was proposed. The current waveforms occurring carbonized arc faults and point contact arc faults in household and office appliances were measured. Based on the fractal theory, the information dimension of current phase plane was derived from current waveforms reconstruction in the phase space, and was used as the characteristic parameter; moreover, the zero current time was used as another characteristic parameter in order to identify arc fault in order to identify arc fault. Using above two main characteristics as the input vectors, the support vector machine based model was established. The simulation results from experimental data show the promising ability in identifying arc fault and possible further usage in development of arc fault interrupter with fault location function.
