In the realm of neurosurgery, spinal cord injuries represent a confluence of challenges and opportunities that extend beyond the operating room. These injuries serve as a crucible for therapeutic innovation, demanding a level of surgical expertise that is both intricate and adaptive. The management of spinal cord injuries often necessitates a multidisciplinary approach, compelling neurosurgeons to collaborate closely with specialists in orthopedics, urology, and rehabilitation medicine. This interdisciplinary approach enriches the academic landscape and catalyzes the development of more effective and personalized treatment modalities.

Moreover, spinal cord injuries underscore the imperativeness of ongoing research. Given the limitations of current treatments, which often fall short of achieving complete recovery, neurosurgeons are continually driven to explore new frontiers in both surgical techniques and adjunctive therapies. This quest for innovation is a constant reminder of research’s role in advancing the field.

In February 2004, the Korean Spinal Cord Society (KoSCoS) launched with the involvement of neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, urology, and rehabilitation medicine specialists. This academic collaboration has played a crucial role in the treatment, rehabilitation, and return to society of the spinal cord injury care field. Furthermore, an agreement between the Korean Neurotraumatology Society (KNTS) and KoSCoS was signed on April 17, 2017, and continue to jointly publish the Korean Journal of Neurotrauma.

One of the critical areas in the field of neurotrauma is spinal cord injury, which is interconnected with various medical disciplines, making interdisciplinary research and collaboration essential. The KNTS is an association comprised of neurosurgeons, and collaboration with interdisciplinary societies is crucial in pursuing academic diversity and developing effective treatment methods. The publication of this special issue will serve as evidence of the academic collaboration fostered between the two societies and provide an opportunity to solidify an ongoing cooperative relationship for the future.
