Abstract

Quantum-mechanical oscillations between two macroscopically distinct states of a bistable system are studied. The influence of damping, temperature, and a small bias on the coherent dynamics is examined. The range of parameters where oscillations occur is determined and the time evolution of the occupation probabilities of the two states is calculated. Consequences regarding the search for macroscopic quantum coherence in SQUID rings are discussed.
