ABSTRACT

This article briefly presents a historical approach on the evolution of the relation between architecture and engineering. Extraordinary examples of this collaboration are illustrated in this paper. First, the document illustrates few ancient buildings where architecture, engineering, construction and art were integrated into a single person. Next, more recent examples are presented. In this case, the different disciplines are separated but, nevertheless, an intelligent integration of the different actions is needed to obtain adequate results. This has been achieved by only a few architects, engineers and builders and it worth mentioning that in this stage the artists separated even more from the constructive activity. Finally, the paper shows some contemporary buildings that point put the very positive interaction among architecture, engineering, construction and sometimes art.
