A novel carbon nanotube modified PVC-membrane electrode has been developed for highly sensitive and selective determination of cyanide ion. The electrode showed a good Nernstian response (60.5±0.5 mVdecade–1) over a wide concentration range (7.7 × 10–8 to 1.0 × 10–2 M). The limit of detection was 7.0 × 10–8 M. The electrode displayed a short response time of about 5 sec, and could be used for at least one month without any considerable deviation from Nernstian response. The proposed sensor revealed an excellent selectivity toward cyanide ion over a wide variety of anions, and it could be used at pH = 10. The practical utility of the electrode has been demonstrated by its use for the estimation of cyanide content in aqueous solutions.
