We aimed to develop and validate a Japanese version of the Patient Activation Measure 13 for Mental Health (PAM13-MH). Two hundred and twenty-six participants, who were receiving psychiatric outpatient treatment services at the Yokohama City University Hospital, completed the PAM13-MH and Self Efficacy Scale for Treatment Acceptance (SESTA). A Rasch analysis revealed that PAM13-MH was unidimensional, and the item calibrations were similar to the original version. The internal consistency of the scale (α=0.82) and reliability by test-retest method (r=0.75) were sufficient. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to assess the concurrent validity for PAM13-MH and SESTA;further, the concurrent validity was sufficient (r=0.59). Differences due to sex, age, and diagnosis were not significant. It was concluded that our Japanese version of the PAM13-MH has high reliability and validity, and is useful regardless of the participants' sex, age or diagnosis.
