                      Location-aware computing has emerged due to the evolution of location sensing, wireless networking, and mobile computing. This new class of computing presents unique challenges and requires high performance solutions to overcome the limitations of current wireless networks, stemming from the scarcity of wireless resources. A location-aware system should react to the roaming user's location, by taking location into account when evaluating requests of the mobile client. This paper highlights the differences between location-based and traditional query processing techniques (stemming from the sequential access mode of the wireless medium versus the random access mode of the disk-based environment), and surveys the authors' research work on location-dependent queries. In particular, it explains the complications that location information introduces into caching decisions, giving rise to what is called the valid scope of a datum, namely, the geographical area for which the response to a query is valid. The paper also briefly presents a couple of approaches for disseminating indexing information for broadcasted spatial data into wireless channels, with the goal of facilitating k -nearest neighbor k = 1 and window queries. This line of research is novel for the wireless broadcast community, but it represents a first approach to tackling the problem, since it tries to effectively adapt data structures that have been optimized for traditional disk-based environments.
