Binocular stereopsis is one of the most important cues for the human depth perception. Stereopsis is based on the differences in the right and left retinal images geometrically determined by the depth difference among objects. However, we do not perceive depth as in the physical world. Spatiotemporal characteristics of the images affect the depth perception and therefore it is important to know the spatiotemporal characteristics of human stereopsis both for understanding the human depth process and for evaluating the quality of the stereo images on various 3D displays. The purpose of the present paper is to review psychophysical data for the spatiotemporal characteristics of the binocular depth perception.
