Abstract
We studied the level of neuroactive steroids in the brain, behavior in the “open field,” and the anxiety and phobia status in maturing and mature female rats during the estrous cycle. In female rats aged 2 and 6 months, we found rhythmic changes in the content of corticosterone, testosterone, and estradiol in hypothalamus, hippocampus, amygdala, cingulated gyrus, and cerebral cortex during the estrous cycle. These changes were accompanied by corresponding alterations of locomotor and exploratory activity, emotionality, and anxiety. Correlation analysis suggests that steroid hormones modulate behavioral body adaptations.
