Abstract

When mesoscale vortices interact with the flow, there are three variants of their behavior: rotation, nutational oscillations, and unlimited elongation. This work describes the physical conditions of vortex transformation into filaments. The proportion of vortices that are stretching out into filaments in the World Ocean and some regions, redistributing the energy from mesoscale to submesoscale, is calculated.
