The palatoquadrate of Mastodonsaurus giganteus (Jaeger, 1828), and the evolutionary modification of this region

Schoch, Rainer R.

Abstract

The epipterygoid of the capitosauroid amphibian Mastodonsaurus formed a large, complex element during ontogeny, connecting to up to six neighbouring bones by means of strong sutures. During late ontogeny a considerable part of the palatoquadrate ossified, starting with the massive footplate of the epipterygoid. The high degree of ossification in Mastodonsaurus yields hitherto unknown data on the structure of the palatoquadrate region. Comparison of palatoquadrates throughout basal tetrapods enables a better understanding of the phylogenetic change of the epipterygoid. The homology of the seven described epipterygoid processes is discussed.
