Abstract

A new species from the genus Achnanthidium is described from the bottom deposits of Lake Baikal. The new taxon belongs to the group of small-celled species characterized by linear valve outline and straight distal raphe ends terminating in a subpolar position. It is well distinguished from the closely related Achnanthidium lineare by its smaller size, the transapical striae which are not resolvable in LM and the more linear raphe valves. The newly described species is common in bottom deposits of Lake Baikal and occurs both in recent surface sediment samples and in fossil deposits extending back to at least the Pliocene.
